CENTRAL ILLINOIS COUNTY CLERKS & RECORDER OF DEEDS RELEASE AMERICA 250 VIDEO

PEKIN, IL - Sixteen Central Illinois County Clerks & Recorders of Deeds have released a joint America 250 video featuring a reading of the Declaration of Independence set against their county courthouses and historic community landmarks.

Organized by Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds John C. Ackerman, the video pays tribute to Timothy Matlack, Clerk of the 2nd Continental Congress. Matlack transcribed the final text of the Declaration of Independence into the iconic cursive we recognize today, distributed copies for public review, and on the evening of July 4th, 1776, was the first to read it aloud to a crowd gathered outside Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

Those duties, recording official documents and making them available to the public, are the same responsibilities carried out by independently elected County Clerks and Recorders of Deeds across Illinois today. In that spirit, the sixteen clerks came together to perform that public reading once more, in honor of the America 250 celebration.

Joining together for this bipartisan presentation is:
